Mindfulness for Kids: Child-Approved Yoga Poses
Can kids really get into yoga? We think absolutely!
Starting a yoga practice with your child can be a great way to connect and bond as a family. Not only that, but it’s also an incredible tool to use to help them cultivate mindfulness, reduce anxiety and build strength, mentally and physically.
Here are some child-friendly yoga poses we love to help you get started!
Tabletop Pose
This pose is a great starting point as it’s a foundational pose for many other poses such as Cat and Cow (more on that below). Start by getting down on all fours with your knees shoulder-width part and your hands placed flat on the ground directly underneath your shoulders. Be sure your back is flat like a tabletop!
Cat and Cow Poses
Once you’ve got tabletop down, it’s time to move! Starting with Cat, arch your back, tuck your chin into your chest and pull in your bellybutton. Then, move back into tabletop and immediately begin Cow by sinking your belly towards the floor and arching your back in the opposite direction. Move through these two poses to wake up the spine and prepare for the rest of your practice!
Standing Forward Bend
Test your flexibility! Bend forward at the waist and trying to grab your ankles. No worries if you can’t get that far, simply place your hands on your thighs or calves! Be sure to bend your legs slightly if need be.
Child’s Pose
Quite the fitting name, don’t you think? Begin this pose by starting on your knees and sitting back on your heels. Slowly bring your forehead down to touch the floor and rest your arms back, on either side of your body. If you can’t get all the way down to the floor, that’s okay! Go as far as you (comfortably!) can and rest for a few moments.
Cobra Pose
For this popular pose, begin on your belly and plant your palms next your shoulders. Keep the tops of your feet on the ground and push up with your hands until your arms are straight. Tilt your head back slightly and stay there for a couple breaths.
Downward Facing Dog Pose
Time to get upside-down! This pose is one of the easiest for your child to mimic. Start from standing, placing palms on the ground or from pushing up from Cobra, the goal of Downward Dog is to create a V shape with the body.
Three-Legged Dog Pose
Starting in Downward Facing Dog, simply lift one leg up with your toes facing towards the ground. Alternate between legs and hold for a few breaths. This pose is especially great for kids because it’s a smooth transition from Downward Dog and helps to develop balance and arm strength!
No matter where you start, beginning a yoga practice with your kids is a fun and easy way to create life-long healthy habits! What are some of your favourite yoga poses?
